Charterhouse Chemistry Department
Our competition scheme is for a landmark new chemistry building that would mark the 400th anniversary of one of the UK’s leading independent schools.
Our design seeks to create a sense of arrival at the entrance to the school with a visually bold scheme that respects the character of the neighbouring school buildings. A key challenge was how to design a successful scheme that responds to its surroundings while addressing the technical demands of a modern scientific facility.
The two storey building comprises a series of teaching laboratories, preparation and storage areas, offices, a staff room, and facilities for students. All laboratories face the playing field, and enjoy generous levels of natural light. The laboratories are arranged to allow technicians to access them all safely without having to go through the main student circulation areas.
