Belsize Architects’ Founder Director, Shahriar Nasser, is standing for RIBA Council. Here is his election statement:
I am a Director of Belsize Architects, a small London practice founded in 1995. Our eight-strong practice works around the world and has a broad portfolio of projects across the residential, education, commercial and leisure sectors. If elected to RIBA Council, I want to use that position to extend opportunities for other small practices, and to work with the RIBA to ensure small firms can compete on a level playing field with larger organisations.
– The UK – and London in particular – is a wonderful place to study and practice as an architect. My own practice has certainly benefited from this, attracting talented architects from around the world. I want to work with the RIBA to sustain that positive global status, as it is vital for the future of our profession that the RIBA safeguards Britain’s reputation as a fantastic place for architects to work and train.
– Small practices are often at a huge disadvantage thanks to a procurement system that favours larger firms, and I have experienced the absurdity of PQQs many times. I know I am one of thousands of British architects frustrated not only by the capriciousness of the current procurement regime, but also that smaller practices’ talent and skills are simply overlooked. The RIBA has begun to make some inroads to improve the situation, but much more needs to be done. If elected to Council, I would keep up the pressure on the RIBA and others to open up procurement to help smaller practices compete more fairly.
– Some RIBA initiatives – such as support for practices attending MIPIM or international trade missions – are excellent examples of the RIBA using its resources and reputation to help practices develop and grow. If elected to Council, I will encourage the RIBA to expand this programme to help UK practices – of all shapes and sizes – market themselves more effectively to larger clients in this country and around the world.
– Good design- I would want to promote good and sustainable design, and demonstrate to the public that good design does not need to be expensive and is essential for our wellbeing and our environment. As a member of the Southwark design panel I have seen architects make a difference; initiatives like this need to be encouraged.
